Is It Okay to Store Bags of Mulch in the Garage?

Jun 18, 2025

It's true, many homeowners and landscapers keep bags of mulch stored in the garage. There are, however, some considerations you need to take into account to make certain the mulch will remain in optimal shape and to keep the garage organized and safe.

First of all, we'll look at reasons to store mulch inside your garage. Mulch is usually purchased in bulk and in advance for landscaping, especially if there are special sales going on or delivery dates to be considered. It is best to keep it inside the garage, where it will remain protected from weather conditions such as rain and sunlight. This can lead to the degradation of mulch quality, or it can become waterlogged. It's important to keep the mulch in a dry, protected space such as your garage. This will help maintain its colour, texture and effectiveness.

However, there are a couple of potential drawbacks and best practices that should be considered. Moisture poses a serious concern. Bags can absorb moisture even in the garage, especially when they're not sealed well or if your garage is damp. Wet mulch may develop mildew and mold, which will not only reduce its quality but also cause unpleasant odours as well as attract pests. For this reason, you should always ensure that the mulch bags are sealed tightly and, where possible, keep them off of concrete by storing them on pallets. As a result, the mulch bags are better able to circulate, and the chances of condensation forming under them are reduced.

A pest-control strategy is also important. When stored in large quantities, mulch made from wood chips, bark, or other organic materials can become a magnet for insects and rodents. Sealing the bags will offer some protection. However, inspecting the area frequently and keeping the garage free from food and other attractants is a good idea. To prevent infestation, you should address any signs of insects as soon as possible.

It is also essential to consider the temperature. Even though mulch isn't stored under climate control, the heat of extreme temperatures can make bags sweat. Moisture will build up in them. If mulch is stored in humid heat for an extended period of time, it can start to decompose. To prevent this from happening, you should use the stored mulch as quickly as possible and not keep it in the garage for long periods.

While it is okay to store bagged mulch in your garage, consider the size of your garage. Mulch bags can be heavy and bulky, so make sure you plan the storage space to prevent them from blocking your walkways and equipment. Avoid stacking bags too high to avoid them falling over. This can increase the chance of an accident or spills.
