Sawdust vs. Shavings For Your Needs

The two look similar in the truck but behave differently in the barn, and choosing well comes down to what you are managing: moisture or dust.

Sawdust is fine and really absorbent. It absorbs moisture down quickly; thus, it is ideal for damp applications and deep-litter systems where the aim is soaking capacity. The downside is that the finer material transports more dust, which is a concern in an enclosed chicken barn and around horses with sensitive airways.

Shavings are rougher and a lot less dusty. They keep drier on top, cushion well and are easier to muck out properly, which is why they are the default in horse stables and show barns.  They hold less water per yard than fine sawdust; therefore, heavy moisture operations sometimes run a blend.
