In most cases people are describing the same category of product: a purpose-manufactured wood fibre surfacing designed to absorb impact when a child falls.

The important word is engineered. This is not landscape bark, not the wood chips a tree service drops off, and not a decorative garden mulch. Engineered playground wood chips are produced from clean wood, processed to a controlled fibre size and shape, and screened to remove bark, twigs, leaves, and debris. The fibres are long and irregular rather than round or chunky, which is what allows them to knit together under foot traffic while still cushioning a fall.

That fibrous structure does three jobs at once. It compacts into a stable walking surface instead of shifting like loose gravel. It stays porous so water drains through rather than pooling. And it retains enough loft to absorb the energy of a fall from play equipment.

Engineered wood fiber vs. bark mulch and ordinary wood chips

This is one of the most common questions we get, and getting it wrong is expensive.

Bark mulch is a landscape product. It is excellent in planting beds for moisture retention, weed suppression, and appearance. It is not manufactured or tested for impact attenuation, and it is not accessible under a wheelchair. Bark also breaks down faster and can hold slivers and hard fragments.

Ordinary wood chips from a chipper are unscreened. They can contain bark, leaves, green material, and pieces sized well outside any surfacing specification. They compact unevenly and can decompose into a soft, muddy layer.

Engineered playground wood chips are made to a specification, and that specification is the entire point. If a play area is going to be inspected, insured, or used by a licensed childcare facility, the surfacing needs to be the engineered product.

Safety standards worth knowing

In Canada, children's play spaces are generally designed and maintained to CSA Z614, the standard covering children's playspaces and equipment. On the surfacing side, the relevant ASTM references are commonly cited by manufacturers and specifiers:

• ASTM F2075 — the standard specification for engineered wood fiber used as a playground safety surface, covering particle size, consistency, and contaminant limits.
• ASTM F1292 — impact attenuation, which establishes the critical fall height a given surface and depth can protect against.
• ASTM F1951 — accessibility, which addresses whether a surface can be traversed by a wheelchair. Properly installed and compacted EWF is one of the few loose-fill surfaces that can meet accessibility requirements.

How deep should playground wood chips be?

Depth is where most surfacing failures start. Engineered wood fiber protects by depth, and a surface that looks fine from a distance may be well under specification at the base of a slide or under a swing.

As a general rule, playground safety surfacing is installed at a loose depth of around 12 inches, which settles to roughly 9 inches of compacted material. Deeper fall heights require deeper surfacing. Shallow installs are the single most common reason a play area fails inspection.

Use zones matter too. The area beneath and around equipment — the fall zone — needs full depth throughout, not just directly under the platform. Swing bays and slide exits wear fastest and need to be checked and topped up most often.

How much do I need? Calculating your order

Coverage is straightforward once you have the numbers. One cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, so:

• At 12 inches deep, one cubic yard covers about 27 square feet
• At 9 inches deep, one cubic yard covers about 36 square feet
• At 6 inches deep, one cubic yard covers about 54 square feet

A 1,000 square foot play area at 12 inches of loose depth needs roughly 37 cubic yards. A 2,500 square foot municipal playground needs somewhere around 90 to 95 cubic yards. Refresh and top-up layers use far less, since you are only replacing what has compacted, migrated, or decomposed.

Maintenance and top-ups

Engineered wood fiber is a loose-fill surface, so it moves. Traffic pushes it out of swing bays and away from slide exits, it compacts over time, and it slowly decomposes. Most play areas benefit from raking high-traffic zones back to level on a regular schedule and a top-up layer once or twice a year depending on use.

Check depth with a probe rather than by eye, especially in fall zones. A surface that has dropped two or three inches below spec looks completely normal and offers noticeably less protection.
